Learning Support

All students have the right to be treated with dignity and enjoy the benefits of education in an educationally supportive environment that values and encourages participation by all. At Nagle Catholic College we provide, within our mainstream setting, support for students with a range of disabilities and learning difficulties.

Our resources include a specialised room, 'The Hub' and two classrooms in close proximity to the Hub where learning takes place. The classrooms allow for students in need of Learning Support to access the support according to their needs. Students can use the Hub at Break times for eating and interacting with others students. Our students are given the option of utilising a locker in our locker shed, to avoid large crowds in hallways and to allow them to have space to organise their belongings.

Students may need to access Learning Support for English and Mathematics in our classrooms. Students may be provided with general curriculum support and some intervention. Education support may be provided by our education assistants in classes for students who are in Focus classes or have an Individual Education Plan (IEP). Independence for all our students is a main goal, therefore we work on organisational skills and social skills in our environment. We have a range of resources and programs including technology to assist students with learning difficulties. Students use their own BYOD to access differentiated curriculum.

At Nagle Catholic College our highly valued learning support team consists of a Head of Learning Support and a team of Education Assistants. As a team we work across the school to address our students needs within mainstream classrooms, allowing students to meaningfully access the curriculum. Education Assistants are allocated to classes and work within the class under the direction of the classroom teacher. Students benefit by having the support of an Education Assistant attending their classes, providing encouragement and meaningful learning support within the classroom.

The College works collaboratively with families and outside agencies to address the needs of the individual student. Our students with disabilities enjoy a full program aimed at promoting independent living, accessing recreational and physical fitness opportunities and work experience opportunities. In Year 10 our students in Learning Support can enjoy the transition to TAFE by participating in VET courses both on site and at Durack Institute of TAFE.

Our Learning Support students are provided with a variety of programs and opportunities such as community access visits, Passport to Employment program, work-place experience and working in our Nagle Café. Nagle offers the ASDAN program to selected students with special needs and disabilities. It is a curriculum-based program which is WACE recognised. ASDAN offers a wide range of Awards for all ages and abilities. The ASDAN Programs provides real life context to promote the development of personal, social, independent, ICT and work related skills. The ASDAN award Programs are designed to:

  • Encourage student centred learning

  • Challenge students to achieve

  • Enable students to learn through experience

  • Encourage a wide range of skill development

  • Reward success.

With the numbers of students needing support continuing to grow Learning Support is in a constant state of growth. Professional development and training, increasing resources and programs are essential components to addressing the needs of our students. We endeavour to provide the support our students require through meaningful and engaging learning opportunities.
